Using MEGAvoice in WarBirds

Hardware Requirements

The only additional hardware required to use voice comms is a microphone configured for use with Windows 95.

Using Voice Comms in the WarBirds Online Arenas

Tune the players you want to talk to with the Voice Interface or use the .talk XXXX command. You may include three player ID's in this command, with a space between each six letter ID.

For example, .talk PYRO QUIZ -HT-

Press the Insert key (for the Macintosh, press \) to transmit (hold it down while speaking, release when done speaking). Everyone you have tuned will hear your voice. Note that each player must issue the .talk XXXX command to transmit voice. Tuning them will not enable them to talk back until they use the .talk XXXX command to tune you.

Using Voice Comms in Head to Head Play

Press the Insert key (for the Macintosh, press \) to transmit. No tuning is required.

Using the Voice Interface Window

Voice Interface Window

Type the ID of the player(s) that you wish to talk to in the blank fields at the top of the window. Up to three ID's may be entered. The Apply button accepts the current ID's without closing the voice window, the Cancel button cancels any selections and closes the voice window, and the OK button accepts the current ID's and closes the voice window.

The bottom part of the window is used when another player requests voice comms with you. Their ID will be displayed in the box, and you can accept with the Accept button or decline with the Squelch button.

The Manual button stops the window from automatically opening each time someone requests voice comms with you. If someone requests voice comms while Manual is lit, the Voice button will blink and a text message will appear in the radio display.

Recommendations for Optimal Quality

  • Speak clearly and in short sentences.

  • Don't crowd the microphone. The best distance between you and the microphone will vary depending on what type you have. Experiment by tuning yourself and listening to how you sound.

  • Don't shout.

Llama, a WarBirds player, has created a web page containing excellent tips for setting up your Windows 95 microphone. See Llama's WarBirds Microphone Setup.

Radio Protocol

When you get multiple players using voice comms to each other, it's easy to "step on" each other's transmissions. You can avoid this with some simple radio protocol.

  • Always use short statements.

  • When transmitting, first say who you are speaking to, then who you are, then your message, then "Over" to let others know you are finished speaking.

    For example:

Snail: "Pyro, Snail, watch that zeke on your six! Over."

Pyro: "Snail, Pyro, I see him. Thanks. Over."

    Or, to send to everyone:

Snail: " All, Snail, I'm RTB for fuel and ammo. Over."

While this might seem cumbersome, it lets everyone know who's saying what to whom, and avoids a round of "Say again." or "Who said that?" messages.

As you grow familiar with voice comms and your partners you can omit protocol as long as you understand each other.
