Using the WarBirds Radio

In WarBirds, you have four user-selected radio's available to you. Each radio can be tuned to any of 106 channels. This sounds complicated, but is actually quite simple in practice.

Look at the radio bar below:

Radio Bar

You can see the four radio's - the channel that each radio is tuned to is shown. The radio's are numbered from left to right, and from Radio 1 to Radio 4. The currently selected radio has its associated light lit. In this example:

  • Radio 1 (active radio - light glowing) is tuned to channel 12 (which I'm using to communicate with a bomber group that I'm leading.

  • Radio 2 is tuned to channel 103 (the Gold country channel).

  • Radio 3 is on channel 100 ( the Common channel).

  • Radio 4 is tuned to =worr= (one of the trainers), who I'm bothering with questions.

You can see radio messages in the text buffer. In this case, they are all Host messages - messages from the WarBirds server, that are displayed in bright yellow. You'll see further down this page, that messages on different channels are displayed in unique colors.

Using the Radio's

In flight, you transmit by selecting the radio that you wish to use for transmitting, typing your message, and pressing Enter.

Select the radio's as follows:

  • Press the / key for Radio 1.

  • Press the Shift + / keys for Radio 2.

  • Press the Ctrl + / keys for Radio 3.

  • Press the Alt + / keys for Radio 4.

For example, if my Radio 2 is tuned to the Gold channel (103), and I want to warn my countrymen about some incoming bombers, I will do the following:

  1. Press the Shift + / to select Radio 2.

  2. Type my message, Purp buffs otw F16 hi, and press Enter.

My message will be seen by all Gold pilots, but by no one else.

To receive a summary of your radio's currently tuned channels, type .radio and press Enter.

Scrolling Text in the Radio Text Buffer

Radio Bar

There are three controls on the right-hand side of the Radio Text Buffer:
  • Up Arrow - Clicking on the Up Arrow causes the text to scroll down. You display text that has already passed up and out of the text buffer.

  • Down Arrow - Clicking on the Down Arrow causes the text to scroll up (if you have previously scrolled down with the Up Arrow).

  • Minimize/Maximize Button - Clicking on the Minimize/ Maximize Button (the one under the Down Arrow) causes the Radio Text Buffer to expand in height so that many more lines of text can be displayed. You can also press the Tab key to do this. You display text that has already passed up and out of the normal four-line text buffer.

To minimize the Radio Text Buffer, click the Minimize/Maximize Button again.

Tuning the Radio's

To tune your radio's, type the following command into one of the radio's (it doesn't matter which radio you type this into):

.radio X YYY

where X is the radio you want to modify, and YYY is the channel you wish to assign to it.

For example, to set Radio 2 to receive and transmit on channel 100 (the open channel), do the following:

  1. Type / to bring up the radio bar.

  2. Then type .radio 2 100 (this will appear in the radio bar), and press Enter.

Radio 2 will now be set to channel 100.

Your radio's will not reset to default tuning every time you enter an arena. Once you've tuned your radio's in an arena, the settings will be retained. The only exception is if radio 1 is tuned to one of the country channels (101, 102, 103, or 104)... in that case, it will default to your current country channel whenever you enter the arena.

Ch. 1

1 to 99 Warbirds allows the use of channels 1 to 99. channels 1 to 50 are private within a country... channels 51 to 99 are common to anyone tuned to them, regardless of country. Only Radio 1 can be tuned to these channels. These channels allow private communications for fliers that are not members of the same squadron. For example, between bomber pilots from different squads on an inpromptu raid.
