Navigation in WarBirds
You can look at the map anytime in flight (or on the ground) by hitting the F1 key. Hitting F1 again returns you to the cockpit.
Your position is represented by a "You are here" arrow in the center of the map. The map will scroll as you move around the world. During an online session, two GCI (Ground Controlled Intercept) arrows appear on the map display. The red arrow indicates the direction to the nearest group of enemy planes. The white arrow points to the nearest group of friendly aircraft. Note that the arrows do not indicate individual planes... you must constantly perform visual scans of your immediate area to avoid being surprised by an enemy.

You can zoom in or out on the map with the [ and ] keys. It is always a good idea to engage the autopilot when you intend to look at the map.
The map is segmented into grids. Each grid is 20 miles square (20 miles by 20 miles, or 400 square miles), and has a unique 2 digit designator located in the lower left corner of the grid.
The top of the map is considered North, with East to the right and West to the Left just like a compass. Also visible on the map are fields, the fields are numbered and color coded. So if you are flying for the Red country, you can look at the map and see all the fields your country owns. Similarly, you can view the map to determine where the closest enemy country is. Maps can be zoomed in and zoomed out using the [ and ] keys respectively.
Many times when you are flying you will hear players calling out map coordinates where the enemy might be located. This typically is a 3 digit number where the first two digits represent the map grid. The third digit represents a particular area within the grid. The easiest way to understand this is to look at the keypad on your computer.

Now think of the keypad overlayed on top of the grid you are looking at.
So when someone says "Cons at 1.3.3", you should fly to the lower right hand corner of grid 1.3. If the call was "Cons at 1.3.9", you would fly to the upper right hand corner of grid 1.3.
By using the keypad numbering scheme, it is very easy to locate a specific area within the grid.
