Aircraft: The Kikka. Japan observed the success of the Me262 "super
weapon" of their German ally with great interest. In September 1944
the Japanese Imperial Navy instructed Nakajima to build a combat jet aircraft
based on the 262. The aircraft, dubbed the "Kikka" (Orange Blossom)
was smaller overall than the 262 and rear fuselage was thicker than it's
German counterpart. While the influence of the 262 was unmistakable the
Kikka was an entirely original project. It was designed with folding wings,
not for carrier operations but to be hidden in caves and tunnels for use
in the defense of the Japanese home islands during the impending invasion
which never came. Two prototypes were completed and the first test flight
took place on August 7, 1945. The war ended before any Kikkas actually saw
combat. This WarBirds III Kikka is built on the Me262 airframe. While not
100% accurate this "what if" aircraft is a "present"
for the WarBirds IJN pilots who want something special to fly on jet day.

Aircraft: P-40b, 112 Sqn RAF/Pilot F.O. Duke - AK402 GA-F was a Tomahawk
IIB (P-40C) flown by Flying Officer Neville Duke of 112 Sqn RAF in November
1941. While flying this aircraft, Duke was credited with three kills in
nine days. (a CR.42, a Me 109F, and a G.50) On 30 November, the aircraft
was lost when Duke was shot down by Otto Schultz of JG27. Duke bellied in
and survived the crash, and became the Allies' highest scoring ace in the
Mediterranean theatre. After the war, Duke (DSO, OBE, DFC with two bars,
AFC, Czech Military Cross) flew as a test pilot and at one time held the
world speed record.
The model and the pilot's face are based on
photographs in Neville Duke's war diaries.

Bf 109 G-6/R6 "White 11" from 7./JG

rocket launchers degraded the performance of the planes, and it was hard
to hit with these early, one shot, "fire and forget", NONGUIDED
missiles. So, they were changed to 20 mm gun gondolas late 1943/early 1944
onwards in the bomber interceptors. Note the white RVT band. It started
to appear on III/JG 3 birds around January 1944.

"Kossu" Niiranen Aircraft: Finnish Air Force Bf 109 G-6.
This plane (W.Nr 163627) coded MT-437 by the FAF served in 3./HLeLv 24 (Fighter
squadron 24) during summer 1944. The plane was made by the Messerschmitt
factories in early -44 and sported an older type tail and canopy, but was
equipped with the "Galland-panzer", armored-glass, head armor.
The plane was named to Sergeant-Major L. Ahokas and had a tactical number
"Yellow 9" painted on it's horizontal stabilizer. The stylized
Lynx on the rudder was a suggested symbol of the Squadron, but was only
painted on a very few aircraft before the war ended in Finland. MT-437 was
credited with 4 victories in WWII.
Finnish Air Force markings: It is important to understand that the emblem of
the Finnish Air Force from 1918 to 1945 has nothing to do with Nazi Germany.
The blue swastika ["hakaristi" in Finnish] was a symbol of good
fortune used by Swedish Count Eric von Rosen, who during Finnish Civil War
presented to the Finnish White Army its first aircraft on March 6th, 1918.
The swastika was painted on the upper and under sides of the wings of the
Thulin Parasol he brought from Sweden. This good luck sign was adopted by
the Finnish Air Force to honor the donor of their first aircraft.

This skin is dedicated to Mr. Antti Tani, a FAF WWII veteran, and a fine

(W.Nr 165274), as the pilots called them, coded MT-453 by the FAF, served
in 1./HLeLv 34 (Fighter squadron 34), and was based in Taipalsaari during
the soviet summer offensive in 1944. The plane was also made by the Messerschmitt
factories and was similarly equipped as the MT-437. The aircraft was named
to Sergeant-Major Osku Länsivaara and had a tactical number "White
11" painted on both sides of the fuselage, just in front of the cockpit.
MT-453 was credited with 5 victories in WWII. Of the five victories 3 were
soviet Il-2 Sturmoviks, all shot down in a sigle battle by Sergeant-Major
Antti Tani on Saturday, July 1st 1944.
